How to make a writing portfolio for content and copywriters

A writing portfolio is a short list of your best pieces, each with a line on who it was for and what it did, plus the types of writing you offer and a way to send you a brief. Show 6 to 10 samples, grouped by type, and link to the live piece where you can.

Show the writing you want to be paid for

Writing covers very different jobs: blog articles, website copy, ad copy, social media captions, product descriptions, scripts, emails, journalism. A client hiring for ad copy wants to see short, sharp lines that sell, not a 2,000 word essay. Pick the two or three types you want more of, and lead with them.

Choose 6 to 10 samples

  • Pick pieces that show range inside your focus: a long article, a landing page, a set of ads.
  • Link to the live piece where possible. A published link is stronger proof than a document.
  • For each sample add one line: the client or publication, the type of piece and, if you know it, the result.
  • Show a read time for longer pieces, so clients know what they are clicking into.

If a piece is no longer online, save it as a clean PDF or show the key part as text on your page. Don't send clients to broken links.

Bangla and English

Being able to write well in both Bangla and English is valuable in Bangladesh, especially for brands that talk to local customers and international clients. If you write in both, show it clearly: label each sample with its language, and include at least two strong pieces in each.

Add results and client words

Writing is easier to judge when you can see what it did. Add results you can stand behind:

  • A page that ranked on Google for a target search.
  • An email with a better open or click rate than before.
  • An ad that a client kept running because it worked.
  • A short comment from an editor or client, with their permission.

Don't invent numbers. "The client used it for their launch" is honest and still useful.

Make it easy to send you a brief

  • List your services: blog posts, website copy, ad copy, scripts, with a starting price each.
  • Say how you work: brief, outline, first draft, one or two rounds of changes.
  • Add a clear "Send me a brief" button that opens WhatsApp or email.
  • Keep the design simple. For writers, readable text is the design.

If you don't have clients yet

  • Write 3 to 5 sample pieces for a niche you know: tech, food, travel, education.
  • Rewrite a weak product page or ad and show your version next to the idea behind it, labelled as a sample.
  • Publish on Medium, LinkedIn or a blog, so your samples have real links.
  • Write for a student club, an NGO or a small business in return for a byline.

Questions

How many samples should a writing portfolio have?

Between 6 and 10 strong samples is enough. Group them by type, and lead with the kind of writing you want to be hired for.

What if my writing was published without my name?

You can usually still show it, as long as your client allows it. Say what the piece is and what you wrote, and ask first if you are not sure.

Should I show Bangla and English writing?

Yes, if you write well in both. Label each sample with its language and show strong pieces in each. Many local brands need writers who can do both.

How do I make a writing portfolio without coding?

With EZ Portfolio you pick a typography-first template like Index, add your samples with their links and publish at yourname.ezportfolio.app.
